From Zero to Hero? In a modern, action-packed Hollywood screenplay, this metamorphosis reads like this: a yellow VW beetle ready for scrap turns into a heroic Autobot with heart and humour. This recently happened at Bumblebee, the latest spin-off of the Transformers series.
But anyone who now thinks that they have already seen everything in terms of automotive transformation art with this blockbuster has made the calculation without Porsche. Anyone can go from a bum beetle to a robo-hero, especially with CGI. The question of how to make an already sporty and good-looking sports car like the Cayman even sportier under the real limiting conditions of vehicle construction is much more exciting. The answer from Weissach is Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport.
Like its predecessor, the 981 Cayman GT4 Clubsport, the »Trackday« (for ambitious hobby racers) and »Competition« (for national and international competitions) versions of the mid-engine racer are entirely dedicated to high-frequency use on the race track. Road legal? No one needs that if they're looking for the best possible lap time. Just as unnecessary: the passenger seat. Instead, there's a Recaro racing bucket seat with a six-point harness, a welded-in safety cage and rear wings and doors made of a carbon fibre-like mix of natural fibres.
»The new Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport contains significantly more racing genes than its successful predecessor,« says Porsche Motorsport boss Fritz Enzinger. Which of course also appeals to the driving performance. Instead of 385, the new edition of the GT4 Clubsport with its six-cylinder aluminium boxer engine now presses 425 hp onto the road. Great racing! Without fiction, but thanks to Science, the maximum torque increases from 420 to 425 Newton metres and is now available at 6,600 rpm. It's logical that this unrestrained hunger for revs on the race track gives you at least as much driving pleasure as the 6-speed PDK gearbox with its race-optimised gearbox control.
So you could say: Transformation from a sporty road vehicle to the ultimate racing machine successfully completed. From Hero to Superhero. Or as they call it in Weissach: »consistently enhanced«.
